As you know, each issue is filled with information about birds and birding from across the United States, Canada, and beyond, with a collection of insightful articles from the field and backyard, how-to information, birding news and events, quality products, bird photography, and a bit of inspiration for you to get the most out of all your favorite birding activities.

Get excited for October Big Day, a global event coming up this Saturday – Hooray! Join thousands of other enthusiastic birders October 11th to contribute a bit of time and your birding enthusiasm to help make this the best day of birding during fall migration. All it takes is a few minutes of your time, or a few hours if you prefer: Do your thing, identify and count all the birds you see and hear Saturday and report your list of birds on eBird. Your info will contribute to a collective overview of the distribution of bird species in North America during mid-fall migration, along with birds found worldwide by birders in more than 200 nations.

The staff at The Birding Wire wants to wish you a wonderful holiday weekend as we approach the 4th of July, and we hope birds add to your enjoyment of this extended summer holiday! At this half-way point in the year we will be taking a short summer break, but you can expect your next issue the morning of Wednesday July 16th. We thank all of you for your interest and support, and we look forward to sharing a variety of birds and birding topics with you throughout the year.

As we go to press this week, our editor is birding on another continent, one of his least visited continents – Europe! Paul is visiting a new country too – Portugal – complete with his birding gear and office equipment as he searches for, observes, studies, photographs, and reports on all the birds he encounters during a quick introduction to the birds that inhabit the woodlands, Atlantic beaches, rivers, and a few cities and parks. It will be another aspect of spring birding to share with you and Paul hopes to have some representative photographs to share with you to illustrate his “birding northern Portugal” travelogue.

Without question, this coming weekend is “The Biggest Weekend of Birding” as it marks the peak of spring bird migration in many areas across North America, including the peak period for songbird and shorebird migration as these neotropic migrants arrive or stopover at preferred habitats. Testimony to this being the biggest weekend for birders is that the Global Big Day takes place Saturday, May 10th, as does World Migratory Bird Day, and the World Series of Birding. It’s also the official start of The Biggest Week in American Birding, along with 21 other birding events, and it’s Mother’s Day Sunday!

Have some fun during the coming Presidents’ Day Weekend by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) sometime during any or all of the 4 days starting this Friday thru Monday, from February 14 to 17! But don’t let the name confuse you, it’s no longer just a backyard activity: You can join in this globally important winter birding event wherever you choose to go birding – as many times as you want to report – from your yard or any favorite birding hotspot. The GBBC is an opportunity to report where different birds are found around the world during mid-February.

This Saturday, October 8th, is the day when birders around the world unite to go birding to identify, count, and report all the birds they see at home or in the field, for as long as you prefer – whatever fits into your Saturday schedule. Many birders will make birding a priority on October Big Day, making Saturday something of a birding holiday to search out as many species as possible and report their list of birds to eBird to contribute to a collective look at the distribution of bird species during mid-fall migration.

The staff at The Birding Wire will be taking a short one-week break, so while you won’t receive an issue next week, you will receive your next e-magazine via e-mail the morning of Wednesday, August 5th. Celebrate in a small way, or big; personally or socially (via social media that is). There are also Earth Day events, online and on television, that you can watch and interact with, and some events continue through the rest of the week.
