The ABA Sacramento Community Weekend

Birding walks, birding talks, bird art, and bird photography are all elements of the ABA Community Birding Weekend in Sacramento (White-tailed Kite photo by Paul Konrad).

Weekend in Sacramento, California, to share time among interesting people and birding opportunities. Saturday and Sunday morning birding walks are featured activities, followed by bird photography and bird art presentations, with a Saturday afternoon social event too. All activities are Free and geared for novice and experienced birders alike. Participants can also request a loan of OM System cameras and lenses, and Vortex binoculars to use during field trips when you register in advance. All weekend activities are Free, but participants must register in advance.

A leadoff accessible birding tour to emphasize Birdability Week is open to all birders at Consumnes River Preserve on Saturday morning from 8 to11. Following the field trip, there will be a “Bird Photography” presentation by OM Systems at Mike’s Camera in Sacramento, and the day will be capped off by a “Birds & Brews” social with snacks and drinks at a local restaurant.

Sunday morning’s birding walk will take place at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, followed by a return to Mike’s Camera for a workshop by bird artist Christina Baal, entitled “Painting 10,000 Birds.” Christina will share a presentation and tips for sketching birds, with a second presentation by the ABA’s Artist of the Year, Natasza Fontaine.

The American Birding Association is hosting their series of ABA Community Weekends to connect with ABA members while presenting the activity of birding to a broader group of the public. ABA leaders want to learn more about the interests, wants, and needs of birders, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts; and to provide a forum to exchange ideas and share experiences, while creating a network of people, organizations, and businesses throughout the ABA Area.

ABA Community Weekends are focused on urban centers in the United States and Canada to connect with local organizations, businesses, and birding guides to offer a variety of birding-related activities that can appeal to all levels of birders, including people interested in getting started.
