WBU Hosts the Barred Owl Nest Box Camera

The live video camera feed showing the adult female incubating her new clutch of 3 eggs.

The Wild Birds Unlimited Barred Owl camera is now streaming live from Indiana as the new nesting season started! The female Barred Owl laid her fist egg last week on Monday, February 26, laid a second egg on February 29, and laid her third egg Sunday, March 3rd. Now you can watch the Barred Owls online on 2 cameras, installed inside and outside the big nest box. The Barred Owl nest box was built and installed more than 30 feet high against the trunk of a hickory tree in the backyard of WBU’s President and CEO Jim Carpenter and has been website destination for birders for decades.

“Egg-citing” information about Barred Owls, includes the fact that they typically lay 2 or 3 white oval eggs per clutch, although clutch sizes can range from 1 to 5 eggs. The female will lay 1 egg every 48 to 72 hours (sometimes longer for subsequent eggs) until the clutch is complete. After the first or second egg is laid, the female will begin incubating, an incubation period that lasts 28 to 33 days before the nestling Barred Owls hatch. That means the first nestling should hatch between March 25th and 30th.

While the female incubates, her mate hunts and provides food for her. Barred Owls are mostly nocturnal hunters, and the male’s quick food drop-offs can easily be missed at night. To monitor the male’s occasional arrival, watch the outside view of the big nest box. (Tip: if you double-click on the live feed views they will expand to full frame views.)
