The Wildlife Society and Johns Hopkins University Press seek applicants for the position of editor of the 9th edition of "The Wildlife Techniques Manual."

The Wildlife Society and Johns Hopkins University Press seek a highly qualified and motivated individual who has a proven ability to work and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to assume editorial duties associated with the production of the 9th edition of "The Wildlife Techniques Manual." Desired qualifications include: (1) PhD in wildlife management, wildlife ecology, or related field; (2) wildlife management and conservation experience both in the field, and in the classroom; (3) excellent connections within both these facets of the wildlife community; (4) member of The Wildlife Society; (5) keen understanding of current wildlife management/research needs and techniques; and (6) availability for a minimum of 1-2 days each month dedicated to work on the manual between November 2017 and November 2019, with increased time commitment required in fall-winter 2019 when chapter submissions are due. Preference will be given to authors of chapters in previous editions of "The Manual". Previous experience as a book editor is beneficial but not required.

Description of Duties

The main responsibilities of the editor are: (1) to carefully assess the most recent edition of "The Wildlife Techniques Manual," identifying topics that may need to be updated, added or replaced, thereby ensuring the highest-quality coverage of contemporary techniques used to manage and conduct research on wildlife and their habitats; (2) to identify and secure suitable authors for any chapters that need to be added or replaced and replace current chapter authors who are not available to provide updates; (3) to work with all current chapter authors to ensure timely completion and revision of current chapters; (4) to read and edit submitted chapters, and/or arrange for peer reviewers to undertake thorough assessments of each for readability and scientific rigor; (5) to work with publisher to maintain the agreed-upon schedule for publication of the 9th edition of "The Manual."

The editor will work under contract with Johns Hopkins University Press on behalf of The Wildlife Society.

Review of applications will begin on Aug. 15, 2017. The goal is to have the new editor selected by Sept. 22, 2017.
