San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS), a non-profit organization working to promote the protection and appreciation of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats in San Diego County, seeks part-time, on-call Naturalist Guides who have experience and passion for connecting children and adults to the natural world through experiential learning. Naturalist Guides lead small groups of students and families on hikes to nearby nature spaces, introducing the audience to San Diego's native flora and fauna. Summary of Responsibilities
OutdoorExplore!: Teach our after-school enrichment program, OutdoorExplore!, to elementary and middle school students. Lead small groups of students on hikes to nearby nature spaces located within walking distance from their school to introduce the students to San Diego's native flora and fauna.
Silverwood Science Discovery: Teach our outdoor education program to elementary students at Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary in Lakeside, CA. Lead small groups of students on guided hikes to introduce students to San Diego's chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats.
Weekend Family Hikes: Lead outdoor hikes to diverse audiences, from toddlers to grandparents, to teach them about San Diego's native habitats.
OutdoorExplore!
Provide fun, educational programs to diverse audiences, ranging in age from kindergarten to eighth grade.
Co-lead nature hikes, with one other SDAS naturalist, to nature sites located within a 15-minute walk from
the school site (up to 20 students per group)
Work with after-school provider staff to comply with all safety procedures.
Ability to commit to a four to five-week session (one day per week in the afternoons).
Silverwood Science Discovery
Provide fun, educational programs to diverse audiences, ranging in age from third through fifth grade.
Lead nature hikes along the trails of Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary (up to 12 students per group).
Assist Silverwood volunteers in teaching stations, including the birding station, tracking station, and
education station.
Work with teachers and chaperones to comply with all safety procedures.
Ability to teach this program as scheduled during weekday, morning hours.
Weekend Family Hikes
Provide fun, educational programs to diverse audiences, ranging in age from toddlers to grandparents.
Lead family groups on nature hikes to nature spaces around San Diego County (weekend mornings and
afternoons).
Other Projects
• Assist in the development and teaching of new programs as needed.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
Experience leading outdoor education programs for youth and adults
Excellent oral communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to relate well to visitors of all ages and backgrounds
Understanding, interest, and knowledge of regional habitats, flora, and fauna
A personal passion for connecting kids to nature
Bilingual a plus
Other Job Requirements
Must attend naturalist meetings and trainings.
Must have a valid driver's license, excellent driving record, and reliable transportation.
Must be able to commit to at least two days a week of availability to teach morning, afternoon and weekend
programs.
Must be able to hike up to three miles during a field session and be able to be outdoors in all weather
conditions for extended periods of time.
Must be able to pass a background check and TB test.
