For ten years, the Georgia Ornithological Society (GOS) has sold the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (aka "Duck Stamp").
This year we have introduced online sales. No more checks or postage stamps needed. Nor do you need to be a member of GOS or even a resident of
Georgia. Our goal is simple: more birders buying stamps and
protecting habitat.
You've heard it before; 98% of the money raised goes directly to the purchase or lease of land for the National Wildlife Refuge System.
My first 30 lifers were on Brigantine (now Edwin B. Forsythe) NWR in New Jersey. I'll bet many of you have had a few lifers at National Wildlife Refuges throughout the US. How much are those lifers worth to you? It's time to give a little back, isn't it?
Remember that Rufous-necked Wood-Rail at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge? Well, funds from Duck Stamp sales helped buy land for that refuge. Where will the next mega-rarity show up? Perhaps on a refuge near you.
BTW, a good way to find a refuge near you is available here: http://www.fws.gov/refuges/ . We couldn't have made it any easier for you to support the protection of vital bird habitat.
