Help Census New York’s Loons July 20th

Birders are invited to participate by counting the number of Common Loons on a lake during the New York Annual Loon Census (photo by Paul Konrad).

The New York Annual Loon Census is held across the state of New York on the third Saturday of July each year from 8 to 9am, to provide a “snapshot” of the summer loon population in the state. Over time, the results of the Common Loon census provide valuable information regarding the status and trends of New York’s summer loon population. Organized by the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation that is centered in Saranac Lake, New York, the New York Loon Census has been conducted each year since it was initiated in 2001.

Birders are invited to participate by counting the number of loons on a preferred lake or an assigned lake in locations across New York. Participants sign up for a lake in advance, and then record any observations of loons on the lake during the hour from 8 to 9am July 20th.
