You are invited to join birders from around the world to participate in the Global Big Day this Saturday, May 14th. This exciting annual event unites birders from around the world to report all the birds they see at their favorite birding hotspots, including their yards. Wherever you are, whether you have some hours for birding, or just 15 minutes to participate, you can join the global team Saturday to help biologists study the bird populations on each continent during mid-May. During last year’s event, birders set 4 World Records for a single day of birding!

Drawing on years of field research, a team of biologists has revealed trail camera photos and drone videos that show the consistent presence of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers at their study site within extremely remote swampy forests in Louisiana. Their evidence also indicates repeated re-use of foraging sites and core habitat. Declared “extinct” last year by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, this new information is revealing and offers hope that a few Ivory-billed Woodpeckers still exist in bottomland hardwood forests in Louisiana.

Participate with thousands of other birders this Saturday during the first October Big Day, on October 6, to find and record all the birds you see through eBird. You don’t need to be a bird expert or participate all day long; even birding 30 minutes in your backyard counts. The October Big Day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time zone, and you can report birds from anywhere in the world on eBird, a worldwide bird checklist program used by hundreds of thousands of birders.
