Pueblo, CO — An Endangered California Condor was admitted to the Nature and Raptor Center of Pueblo on Sunday, May 31.
The bird had taken refuge in the yard of the Toth Family in Black Forest, CO. After an overnight stay in the yard, the family contacted the Ellicott Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Ellicott, CO for assistance with the large animal. EWRC responded and dispatched Transport Volunteers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to pick up the downed bird. Once captured, the bird was identified as a California Condor and transported to the Nature & Raptor Center for care.
The condor was thin, but otherwise in good condition when admitted. The NRCP provided supportive care. The Peregrine Funds' Condor Recovery Project personnel were contacted. They identified the condor as 701. The bird was hatched in Boise, ID in 2013 at a Peregrine Fund captive breeding site. It had been released last September at Vermilion Cliffs in Arizona.
The Peregrine Fund Condor Recovery Team picked up the young condor from the NRCP Tuesday morning and are returning it to their Arizona facilities. There it will receive treatment and care and hopefully be returned to the skies.
